Study: Understanding why women seek abortions in the US
A study, published in BMC Women’s Health, examined close to one thousand women over a period of
two years and sought to study major reasons why women sought abortions in the United States. The
study surveyed both adolescent and adult women from thirty US facilities one week after they had a
termination of pregnancy.
Financial concerns (40%), timing (36%), partner related reasons (31%), need to focus on other children
(29%) were found to be the predominant factors identified. Of note, 64%, reported a combination of
factors and only about 1% described being influenced by others.
