ABORTION SERVICES

The decision to have an abortion should be made early and performed as soon as possible for the lowest risks and costs.

First Trimester Abortion

An early abortion is considered to be low-risk in the first trimester of pregnancy, within 10 weeks of your first day of your last menstrual period. The early abortion methods we offer at Metropolitan Medical Associates include the Abortion Pill and Dilation & Curretage (D&C).

Abortion Pill

The Abortion Pill (RU486)  is the alternative method to having a surgical abortion if you are up to 10 weeks pregnant. The procedure involves medication, called Mifeprex or Mifepristone, in combination with Misoprostol to terminate an early pregnancy without surgery. First pill is taken in our office, and four tablets are taken at home. It is considered to be the safest and most convenient way to end an early pregnancy.

Note: The Morning After Pill, or Plan B, is NOT the abortion pill, but is a contraceptive pill. It must be taken with 24 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse.

Dilation & Curretage (D&C)

Dilation & Curretage (D&C) is a simple early surgical abortion method that involves a gentle aspiration of the pregnancy tissue and possibly, a mild scraping of the uterine cavity to ensure its completeness. A D&C procedure is routine, considered safe and will not affect your ability to get pregnant in the future. Long-term risks such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage are not expected.

Second Trimester Abortion

For 2nd trimester abortions, Metropolitan Medical Associates uses the Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) method, up to 24 weeks of gestation.

A D&E is a surgical procedure therefore, it’s performed in our state licensed operating room. The complication rate in our center is very low because of our experienced Board Certified OB/GYN doctors and qualified medical staff.

Patients usually resume normal activities immediately or within a few days of their procedure. The side effects are minimal, and minor complications such as infection, bleeding or persistent cramping are usually treatable in a doctor’s office.

Fetal Anomalies

An abortion can occur spontaneously due to complications of pregnancy or it may be induced. An abortion induced to preserve the health of the pregnant female is termed a therapeutic abortion, while an abortion induced for any other reason, is termed an elective abortion. The term abortion most commonly refers to the induced abortion of a human pregnancy, while spontaneous abortions are usually termed miscarriages.
